A wild elephant rampaged through a crowded highway Friday in southwest Chinas Yunnan Province, trampling cars and sending panicked tourists fleeing. The Asian elephant walked onto No.213 national highway at around and stayed on the road for 20 minutes, according to local police authorities. Smartphone video by a witness recorded the elephant rubbing against tourist vehicles parked on the roadside and playfully nudging some of them with its trunk. The culprit, identified as an adult male elephant nicknamed Bamboo Shoot Tusks, is believed to have wandered from the Wild Elephant Valley nature reserve in the provinces southernmost prefecture of Xishuangbanna. Personnel with the scenic area say the beast has shown heightened aggressiveness, driven by its urge to mate recently. There was an additional emergency case as a family of four, three adults and a kid, was still inside the first car in the line, Wild Elephant Valley deputy manager Liu Kai said in a telephone interview. Notified of the situation, policemen immediately evacuated the family from the car and cordoned off the site. They also asked tourists to stay away and closed traffic to ensure safety on the road. Fortunately, the Bamboo Shoot Tusks was in a more playful mood during its stay on the road. By the time the elephant left, it had dented 15 cars, smashed windows, blew out tires and broke some chassis.
